Highly Recommended for Musicians of all Playing Levels!

World Renowned Music Professor,

Dr. Gilbert Trythall

This complete ear training system comes with all of the professional music theory and ear training instructional products created by Dr. Gilbert Trythall; Spell ID, Chord ID, Pitch ID and Rhythm ID.  Dr. Gilbert Trythall taught music at Knox College, Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University), and West Virginia University for more than 35 years.  He has just completed two years as Visiting Professor of Music at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo in Vitória, Brasil.  He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Northwestern and Cornell Universities and an award winning composer of numerous traditional and electronic compositions.

Spell ID

Spell ID is a complete beginning music theory book including cadences, borrowed chords and secondary dominants.  Answer questions by clicking the screen keyboard.  See your answer notated and played as you answer.  Questions in each exercise are presented in random order for repeated practice.  Peek at the correct answer, go to the next question, or repeat previous questions at any time.

There are 84 scale and chord spelling studies:

  • Spell major and minor scales.
  • Spell triads by function in keys.
  • Spell triads by function in parallel keys.
  • Spell triads from chord names.
  • Spell seventh chords from chord names by type.
  • Spell seventh chords from chord names in keys.
  • Spell 9th chords from chord names.
  • Spell 11th chords from chord names.
  • Spell 13th chords from chord names.
  • Spell cadence patterns (two chords).
  • Spell secondary dominants and resolution (two chords).
  • Spell 7th chords by function in parallel keys.

There are 30 interval studies:

  • Practice perfect fifths and fourths.
  • Practice thirds and sixths.
  • Practice seconds and sevenths.
  • Practice augmented seconds and diminished sevenths.
  • Practice augmented fourths and diminished fifths.
  • Practice mixed intervals.

Chord ID

Chord ID has 18 levels of graduated ear training difficulty.  There are 60 units with 20 questions in each unit for a total 1200 questions, each with 8 chords.  Questions are in major and minor keys in Rock, Country, Latin and Jazz styles with immediate feedback and scoring.  Chord ID has three answer modes: Functions (Roman numerals), Chords (C Maj, Dmin, etc.) and Qualities (Maj, min, dim).

Exercises begin with identifying only the I or V chords.  Begin practice by selecting an easy level (select under Levels menu) and gradually advance.  Click the green button to hear a sequence of 8 chords (1 per bar) played at a moderate tempo.  Identify each chord by clicking a screen button as the music plays.  Repeat as many times as necessary, click in the appropriate box and change any chord, then check your answer.

To play chords 'by ear' you must:

  • Identify chord quality (major, minor, or diminished) - this limits chord choices to 3 or less.
  • Recognize the scale-step 'feeling' of the root of the chord (I, ii, iii, etc.) - this determines the exact chord function.
  • Know the chord name for that function in that key (D, Em, C#dim, etc.) - that is the chord to play.

Pitch ID

Pitch ID trains pitch and interval identification by ear with immediate feedback and scoring.  Pitch ID generates unlimited questions in every major and harmonic minor key in 15 levels of graduated difficulty.  Begin with pitches or intervals selected from 'do' 'mi' 'sol', scale steps 1, 3, and 5 from the selected scale.  Or begin with more scale steps.  Correctly identify the note or interval by clicking the screen keyboard and the program replays, shows, sounds the correct note and then sounds the next note.  If you do not correctly identify the pitch or interval, the program indicates an error, repeats the note and pauses for your answer.  Auto-Advance advises when to advance to questions containing more scale steps.  Auto-Modulate advises when to change keys.

Features:

  • Select keyboard or interval questions from menu.
  • Auto-Advance can be turned on to advise when to advance to questions containing more scale steps.
  • Auto-Modulate can be turned on to advise when to change keys.
  • Select any MIDI sound for the keyboard.
  • Select keyboard note-names, letters or syllables, on or off.
  • Select treble clef or octave down for practice.
  • Repeat any question.
  • Peek at any answer.
  • Automatic scoring, based on number of correct clicks, can be reset at any time.

The extensive Help file provides suggestions about how to listen for scale-steps and intervals, how to practice, related music theory, and the notation of all scales.

Rhythm ID

Rhythm ID is designed to develop and improve your recognition of simple and compound rhythm meters.

Features:

  • Selectable meter (speed)
  • Selectable number of rhythm patterns.
  • Graduated exercises to meet and expand your skill level.
  • Unlimited practice.
